Hyundai unveils sketch of next Sonata

A sketch of the next Hyundai Sonata.

Drawings show that Hyundai's approach to the Sonata design has been completely rethought. Based on the drawings, the 2011 Sonata will have a fluid look, accented with a sharp crease in the side sheetmetal that flows upward, stretching from the front door to the rear of the car, ending on the trunk lid. The thin C-pillar creates a coupelike appearance.

The headlight treatment and grille shape draw inspiration from the Hyundai Genesis sedan.

Hyundai says the Sonata will be available with a panoramic glass roof. New features include a six-speed automatic transmission, paddle shifters attached to the steering column and a push-button starting system. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be offered.

The next Hyundai Sonata is shown in this sketch from the back.

The U.S. model will be assembled in Montgomery, Ala.

The new Sonata will replace the current model, which debuted in September 2004 and has performed below expectations.
